A new mandatory standard for bunk beds is expected to improve safety for the hundreds of thousands of children who use them. Since mid-2000, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission requires all bunk beds sold in the United States to comply with the standards:

  • Every bunk bed must have an affixed label that states the bed’s manufacturer, model, and mattress size information.
  • Every bunk bed must have a warning label that advises against placing children under six years of age in the upper bunk.
  • If the bunk bed is taller than 30 inches, it must have a continuous guardrail on the wall side of bed.
  • Openings on the upper and the lower bunks must be small enough that a child’s head, torso, or limb cannot pass through them.

Bunk Bed Safety Tips

  • Follow instructions carefully when assembling a new bunk bed.
  • Allow only children six years or older to sleep on upper bunks.
  • Use only proper-sized, manufacturer-recommended mattresses.
  • Make sure that there are no openings in either the upper or lower bunk that are large enough for a child’s head, torso, or limb to pass through.
  • Discuss safety concerns and the proper usage of bunk beds with your children.

It is important to understand that furniture and toys that are not manufactured in the United States may not conform to lead standards. Many companies sell bunk beds and children’s bedding products that have been imported from China, Brazil or other 3rd world countries.

Recently we saw the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s first penalty resulting from a chain of toy recalls in 2007. Toymaker Mattel and its Fisher-Price subsidiary have agreed to pay a $2.3 million civil penalty for importing and selling toys with excessive levels of lead. The fines represent the third highest fine in the agency’s history.

In August and September 2007, the toys from China were pulled from shelves in after testing discovered that they broke the U.S. legal limit on the amount of lead allowed in paint. Many of the toys were from lines of popular characters such as Barbie and Go Diego Go.

The recalls came at a high point of consumer concern over products being shipped from China. In March of that year, contaminated pet food imported from China was found to contain melamine, which was linked to as many as 3,600 pet deaths.

Before you purchase a bunk bed for your family, ask the retailer if the product is Made in the USA or an import. The bottom line is keep American strong, be safe and purchase only bunk beds and bedding 100% manufactured in the United States.
